STI Clinic and Referrals

In addition to commodity distribution, provision of STI and HIV prevention communication, part of the minimum package (see Box 1) aimed to be provided to each community member includes regular referral to the Implementing partner clinic. While a strong focus of the clinic remains to be STI treatment, other services relevant to the needs of community members are met. This includes abscess and ulcer management for IDU. Abscesses as a consequence of injecting drug use are common among IDU and presentation for these infections is often delayed, sometimes until the abscess has deteriorated and become an ulcer which then may further deteriorate, occasionally ultimately resulting in loss of limbs

For FSW, MSM, IDU/SW and female IDU , where female IDU often engage in higher risk sexual activity, referrals for regular STI check ups are encouraged to be provided monthly as well as symptomatic treatment are provided at least once and again if the individual has not visited the clinic within 6 months.
