Background: Akimbo society is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) registered under the society registration Act, 1860 as amended by the registration of societies, (Nagaland First Amendment Act, 1969). No. RS2412 dt. 05-10-93. It is also registered with the Ministry of Home affairs, New Delhi. Its area of operation covers North-East of India with Head Office at Dimapur, Nagaland. The word Akimbo (in Sema dialect) means “I have reached a home I was searching for”. It is kept in memory of the present Director’s late adopted son Akihito (pet name Akim-bo). The society has been established in the year 1993 by a handful of dedicated women folk who had the desire to create an avenue for the underprivileged and weaker sections of people of the society. The main brain behind this endeavour is Mrs. Clara Sumi, the present Director/Secretary of the society.
Objective:
- Education of key population and the general people on HIV/AIDS & STD.
- Promotion of Condom
- Free medical treatment of STD
- Needle and Syringe exchange programme
- eManagement of abscess and over dose among IDUs.
- Advocacy to create enabling environment for Key population
