Background:
PASDO was formed by people from different walks of life in the community who were committed to work with the community to achieve the vision of empowered, just, equal, sustainable, peaceful society. It was the response of the members to the analysis of the past trend of development in the society which had made the people dependent on external agencies for their development and where people were made objects of development which came from above. The culture of self dependence/inter dependence, self confidence, dignity of labour and honesty was fast eroding. Corruption, violence became everyday’s affairs. Disparity between haves and haves not increased. It was felt the need to organize and empower people to make them realize their own potentiality and plan their own development in a participatory approach. Thus, with the leadership of Mr.Gajendra P.Mohanty, Ms.H.Thotchuila who were trained under two years course on Rural Development and Management and had experience working in Rural development field since 1993 and Mr. V. Lungrei who had the experience of working in Community Development through church since 1970s and Rural development work since 1993, the likeminded members from government departments, farmers, teachers, social activist and students –altogether 20 persons came together to form a Society-PASDO in 1997.It is the initiative and effort to facilitate empowering community development process.
Participatory Action for Sustainable Development Organization (PASDO) is a Voluntary, Non-Governmental Organisation registered under Societies Registration Act (1989) Manipur in the year 1997 and under FCRA (1976) in 2003.
Objective:
- To support, capacitate and facilitate local people to enhance human resources and leadership for sustainable community development initiatives and actions.
- To strengthen and empower women’s groups for effective participation in decision making processes
- To mobilise and support people’s action for self reliant economy, just and social structure and order which is free from domination, exploitation, corruption, violence, fear etc and sustainable resource management.
- To engage in and promote social services women and children through self help initiative and participatory process
- To organise Self Help Groups and Cooperative Society of women for enhanced and sustained income and to address issues of their empowerment
- To promote, manage, support and coordinate Social Welfare Centre, Social Training Centre, Mother and Child care centre
- To promote and establish Demonstration Centre on Appropriate Rural Technologies etc
- To organise Vocational Training/ Entrepreneurship Development Training and support projects in improved and appropriate technologies for increasing local productivity in Agriculture, Horticulture , Pisciculture, Forestry, Animal Husbandry, Household industry and improvement of livelihood
- To collaborate / network with Non-Government Organisations Government Agencies and Community Based Organisations in genuine development initiatives and activities and peace and sustainability in the region
- To promote local actions on biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource management
- To promote health of the community through programme on empowerment of persons with Disability, Old aged, Drugs and HIV/AIDS related issues
- To organize and capacitate people get their rights and entitlement
