Background: SHALOM is a non-government health organization which was established in 1995. SHALOM started, among other programs, Needle Syringe Exchange program (NSEP) in August 1995 which continues till date except for a short breaks due to civil disturbance in 1997-1998. There are 4000-5000 drug users in Churachandpur District of which about 2006-2427 are injectors (ORCHID PSA 2005). The sero-positive rate for HIV among IDUs came down to 24% in Churachandpur. SHALOM is now running its HIV prevention and intervention program by implementing multiple strategies including NSEP, condom promotion, Oral drug substitution, treatment for STIs, capacity building and counselling for IDUs and SWs.
Objective:
- To prevent HIV transmission through injecting drug use among 1000 IDUs and sexual partners in Churachandpur area.
- To prevent sexual transmission of HIV/STI among 1000 IDUs and 200 SWs and their sexual partners in Churachandpur area.
