Background:
SAHARA is a Peer led Organization established in the year 1978. It works with people irrespective of their beliefs, economic status, literate or illiterate and the marginalized. Sahara provides opportunities and empowerment to them through a variety of comprehensive, user friendly treatment options and socio-economical reintegration programs. In the year 1996, Sahara has established a substance use and HIV/AIDS project in Churachandpur, Manipur in collaboration with Lamka rehabilitation and research Centre (LRRC). During this period, Sahara has successful implemented detoxification and rehabilitation programme for substance users’ in the District. But due to the ethnic conflict in the year 1997 Sahara was forced to return to its Head Quarter, New Delhi.

Taking, the magnitude of the problems of Churachandpur into consent Sahara re-establish a residential care and rehabilitation programme in the year 1999. Seeing the rapid progress of HIV transmission in the District, the needs for comprehensive response towards the duel menace of Drugs and HIV/AIDS has emerged. In due course of time, Sahara has initiated its services more focused and streamlined to complement the continuum of care more effective. This has result in an extended services component for building an effective framework to address the issues involved in the care, control and prevention of HIV/AIDS and Drugs abuse in the District.
Starting with de-addiction and rehabilitation programme for substance User in the District.

Objective:

  • To prevent HIV transmission through injecting drug use among 450 IDUs in 38 villages of southern Churachandpur and Singngat sub-divisional area.
  • To prevent sexual transmission of HIV/STI among 450 IDUs and 25 IDU/SW and their sexual partners in 38 villages of southern Churachandpur and Singngat sub-divisional area.
